ADHD care for children and teens

ADHD care that looks at the whole child

When your child struggles with attention, impulsivity, or everyday routines, the effects can reach the whole family. School may take more effort than others realize. Transitions can become exhausting. You may wonder whether ADHD explains what you’re seeing—or whether something else is part of the picture.

At Clarity Center, I provide pediatric mental health care for children and teens ages 3–18 in Portland, Oregon. I work with families to understand their child’s strengths, difficulties, and developmental history, then build an individualized plan together.

When the usual advice hasn’t been enough

Families often reach out because:

  • Their child struggles to begin tasks, stay organized, or follow through.
  • Impulsive reactions or strong emotions are affecting home or school.
  • An existing ADHD diagnosis doesn’t explain everything.
  • They have questions about medication, side effects, or a previous treatment experience.
  • Anxiety, sleep difficulties, sensory differences, or autism make the picture more complicated.

You don’t need to arrive with a settled explanation. Understanding what is happening is part of our work.

How I approach ADHD care

We begin by discussing your child’s history, current concerns, and experiences across settings. I want to understand what is difficult, what is going well, and what your family hopes will change. Your child’s communication, sensory experiences, and the demands of their environment help shape that understanding.

Care may include parent consultation, practical recommendations, collaboration with other professionals, and medication when appropriate. We discuss options together and identify specific goals so we can evaluate whether treatment is helping.

Follow-up visits give us time to consider your child’s experience, review benefits and side effects, and adjust the plan.

When ADHD overlaps with other needs

Attention difficulties rarely tell the whole story. Your child may also be navigating anxiety, autistic differences, sleep concerns, or distress around everyday demands.

I consider these concerns together. The aim is to develop a plan that fits your child, including the parts of their experience that do not fit neatly into a single diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Does an ADHD consultation mean my child will need medication?

Not necessarily. We discuss your concerns and treatment options before making decisions. When appropriate, medication can be one part of an individualized plan.

Can you help if my child already has an ADHD diagnosis?

Yes. We can review current concerns, previous treatment, and what you hope will be different.

Can you collaborate with my child’s other providers?

With appropriate permission, I can collaborate with your child’s pediatrician, therapist, or school to help inform care.
